Kole Calhoun announces retirement
Kole Calhoun, one of the Angelās outfielders, announced his retirement from baseball on Friday. The 36 year-old made the announcement via Instagram. He was the Angelās primary right fielder during their last playoff run and had played for several other major and minor league teams after his time with Los Angeles.
āThe day has come that I announce my retirement from Major League Baseball,ā Calhoun wrote. āI know how extremely lucky I am to even be able to say that. Baseball was always my dream and to make that my reality fills me with gratitude. I have loved this game since I can remember, so making this announcement weighs heavy on my heart. This day comes for all players eventually and I can honestly say that I have given this game everything I have and I walk away with no regrets.ā
Astros looking at Blake Snell
The Houston Astros are heavily pursuing starting pitcher Blake Snell, the reigning NL Cy Young Award winner. This comes as the Astros are dealing with multiple pitching injuries and are looking to bolster their rotation before the season starts. Snell is reportedly asking for a 3-year deal with opt-out options, and the Astros are one of several teams interested in him. However, acquiring Snell would cost the Astros draft picks due to the Padres' qualifying offer, which could be a significant price for a team already recovering from the sign stealing scandal.
Former Star released from hospitalThree-time World Series champion Darryl Strawberry was released from the hospital Wednesday after suffering a heart attack two days ago. Strawberry shared his recovery on Instagram. He had played for both the New York Mets and Yankees. | Ehtan Small to miss games due to injuryThe San Francisco Giants announced that their left-handed pitcher Ethan Small will miss time due to an oblique strain. The severity of the strain was āmoderateāand will require him to miss āseveral weeksā. |
First female MLB umpire gets closer
Credit: Minor League Baseball
The possibility of a female umpire becoming reality for the first time ever is getting closer. She was just announced to have been on the call-up list for the majors from the triple-A. Earlier this year she became the first woman to umpire an MLB spring training game since 2007. Pawol graduated from Minor League Baseball's umpire camp in 2016 and became the seventh woman to call a minor-league game
āI greatly appreciate everyoneās enthusiasm, everyoneās welcoming attitude on the field. Tonight was very, very special. Both managers shared congratulations, (everyone was) welcoming, enthusiastic. The players on the field, so many said congrats and great to see you up here. A gentleman, Javier (Bracamonte, Astros bullpen coach), he ran out early in the game and said he has a daughter playing all kinds of sports. Itās good to see you out here.āā
