Judge dismisses suit about A’s stadium

Fifteen months ago, a Nevada teachers' union initiated legal action to block public funding for the Oakland Athletics’ proposed Las Vegas ballpark. Backed primarily by A's fans hoping to keep the team in Oakland, the union has so far lost both legal challenges.

In May, the Nevada Supreme Court rejected the union’s effort to put the issue to a statewide referendum. More recently, a state district court dismissed the union's lawsuit to halt $380 million in public funding, citing the premature nature of the claims.

The judge ruled that because the financing mechanisms are not yet active, the claims of constitutional violations could not be fully assessed.

The decision did not address the merits of the union’s allegations, but it did reject concerns that the ballpark funding would necessarily impact public education.

Athletics owner John Fisher remains responsible for the majority of the stadium costs, estimated at $1.5 billion, and must still finalize key agreements before any public money can be spent.

Despite the legal setbacks, the union is considering a referendum in 2026 and an appeal of the latest ruling, maintaining that the fight to protect public funds is worth continuing.

Pavin Smith just short of home run cycle

Pavin Smith of the Arizona Diamondbacks had a breakout performance in a game against the Houston Astros, hitting three home runs and driving in eight runs.

This performance nearly doubled his home run total for the 2024 season, as he had only four homers prior to the game. Smith's night began with a three-run homer in the second inning, followed by a grand slam in the third, both off Astros ace Justin Verlander. He added a solo shot in the fifth, bringing his total to three home runs.

Smith’s seven RBIs through three innings set a new Diamondbacks record, and he finished the game 3-for-4 with eight RBIs, just one shy of the franchise's single-game record.

His impressive showing raised his batting average and OPS significantly. Given his sporadic playing time in recent years due to injuries and inconsistent performance, this game may help him secure more opportunities as the Diamondbacks push for a playoff spot.
