Four inducted into baseball Hall of Fame
The plaques of Adrian Beltre, Todd Helton, Joe Mauer and Jim Leyland were unveiled Sunday at the Baseball Hall of Fame as the Class of 2024 was officially inducted into the hallowed halls of baseball history.
Each gave speeches in front of a loud and energized crowd filled with family, friends and many, many fans, recalling their journeys to that moment and the people who helped them along the way.
Adrian Beltre: A 21-year veteran who thanked his family, coaches, teammates across all his teams, and especially his wife.
Todd Helton: The Rockies first baseman who spent his entire career with the team thanked his family, coaches, teammates, and owner.
Jim Leyland: The fiery manager thanked his family, colleagues, players across all his teams, and especially the fans.
Joe Mauer: The hometown catcher for the Twins thanked his family, coaches, manager, fans, and especially his wife and kids.
Longest home run hit this season
On Sunday, the San Francisco Giants' designated hitter led off the team's game against the Colorado Rockies by hammering the longest home run of the 2024 season so far.
Facing Rockies righty Ryan Feltner, Soler turned around a 94-mph fastball and sent it 478 feet to center field. The ball left the bat at 109.3 mph.
The 478-foot home run is the Giants' second-longest in the Statcast era, which began in 2015. Alex Dickerson's blast on September 1, 2020 remains the team's longest. That ball went 480 feet and also came against the Rockies at Coors Field.
