FAA investigation after Rockies flight

The United States Federal Aviation Administration is investigating a Toronto-bound chartered United Airlines flight taken by the Colorado Rockies after the team’s hitting coach looks to have posted a video on Instagram of him sitting in the pilot’s seat and joking about landing the plane.

The Federal Aviation Administration restricts cockpit access to specific, authorized individuals. While it is possible to gain permission to see the flight deck, it is only possible to do so when the flight is at the gate and not operational. These restrictions do not change in a chartered plane as was the Rockies plane. While unrelated, this comes less than 6 months after an incident on an Alaskan Airlines flight where a pilot riding in the cockpit’s jump seat attempted to shutdown the engines mid-flight and had to be physically restrained by the pilots.

As a clear violation of our safety and operational policies, we’ve reported the incident to the FAA and have withheld the pilots from service while we conduct an investigation

Ohtani breaks Hideki Matsui’s record

Shohei Ohtani left his mark in the MLB record books on Sunday after breaking Hideki Matsui's record for most home runs by a Japanese-born player. Ohtani hit his 176th career homer in the third inning of the Dodgers' 10-0 win over the New York Mets on Sunday afternoon at Dodger Stadium.

MLB pulls Mac app from App Store

One of the many great benefits of Apple Silicon is the ability to run iPhone and iPad apps on the Mac. For baseball fans, this meant support for using the iPad version of the MLB app on macOS. When the season kicked off last month, the iPad version of the MLB app was available in the Mac App Store, but crashed at launch after you signed in. An update was provided to the app but never fixed the issue, so instead they just removed the app. It of course could return in the future, however there is no indication.

Aroldis Chapman suspended

Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Aroldis Chapman has been suspended two games and fined an undisclosed amount for "inappropriate actions" during Monday's game against the New York Mets, MLB announced Thursday. Unless he appeals, Chapman is scheduled to start the suspension Friday, when the Pirates host the Boston Red Sox. Chapman was ejected by homeplate umpire Edwin Moscoso after giving up a two-run double in the eighth inning of Monday's loss to the Mets. "He evidently said something that the umpire did not like," Pirates manager Derek Shelton said after Monday's game.

Nestor Cortes told pump fake illegal

Nestor Cortés pulled off a pump fake during his windup while facing Andrés Giménez of the Cleveland Guardians on Sunday. Unfortunately for him, the move has been deemed illegal. Major League Baseball told Cortés on Monday that he cannot attempt the move again. Cortés, who is known for pausing mid-windup to offset the timing of hitters, didn't fool Giménez, who ended up fouling off the pitch. Umpire Mark Carlson did not say anything to Cortés following the pitch, but going forward it would be ruled a ball. “I’m the only one that’s done it and the only one that will ever do it,” Cortes said via the New York Post. “I’m in the [record] books!” Yankees manager Aaron Boone was already thinking the pump fake wouldn't last very long in the pitcher's arsenal as soon as he saw it. “My thought was, it doesn't feel legal," Boone said Saturday. "But pretty funny.”
